  Become someone's mentor
Totnes General News Storetq9yes writes "
Thanking you for taking two minutes of your time to read our message, because the Youth Enquiry Service (YES) requires the help of local dynamic people, we require your help.

For over ten years YES have been offering free, confidential and non-judgemental advice, information, support and counselling to the young people of Totnes and the South Hams. YES have managed to do this, entirely funded by voluntary contributions and grants. The very nature of our work is always highly confidential and means that YES are unable to boast of their excellent record of achievements and successful outcomes in supporting local young people at difficult times in their lives.

We are currently starting a Community Mentoring Scheme, working in association with King Edward VI Community College. Mentoring brings to a young person a huge amount of benefits. Studies show that young people in these schemes are involved in less crime, attend school and college more and get better results.

A good mentor can make a difference and help a young person maximise their potential and you could be that good mentor we require. We want mentors from all the facets of our local community, young people come to us with a wide range of different problems and we need a diverse range of mentors to be able to help. We all have our own personal lifeskills and abilities to enrich a young person’s life

So please, if you think you can spare one or two hours a week to help a local young person, to build a strong local community with genuine community cohesion.

Please contact our offices on either 01803 865432 or our Kingsbridge office on 01548 857535. In our absence, please leave a message.

Thank You

Innovative New Personal Training Centre in Totnes Offers Guaranteed Results
Local Sports NewsAnonymous writes "Crossfit Westcountry is a unique personal fitness training centre which launched on the 3rd March 2008 and is the creation of former competitive athlete and YMCA qualified instructor Chris Longley. Based upon the CrossFit method which was developed in the USA and has become popular with athletes, military units, law enforcement officers and fire-fighters, Crossfit Westcountry focuses on getting results by developing the athleticism of their clients through increasing their athletic ability across the 10 elements of complete fitness (cardiovascular endurance, stamina, strength, speed, power, flexibility, balance, agility, accuracy, coordination) and improving their health by offering holistic nutrition and lifestyle advice. They have found that, by focusing on health and performance, they can provide higher motivation and enjoyment than by simply focusing on whether weight has been gained or lost. They have also found that ironically it is this approach that provides the better results in terms of body-fat loss and muscle gain. Whereas the majority of gyms are designed so that a client needs minimal attention from staff i.e. they are fitted with weight machines that need little instruction before use and little skill to work, Crossfit Westcountry have designed their program around movements that require a significant amount of coaching and have outfitted their gym space with simple, purely functional equipment - a variety of free-weight lifting tools, a Concept2 Rower, boxing equipment and plenty of space for gymnastic movements. Chris Longley’s wholehearted belief in his program’s ability to improve a client’s fitness levels is demonstrated by the Crossfit Westcountry guarantee that if a client is not demonstrably fitter in one month of training with them, they get another month completely free. Chris had this to say “All I’ve ever wanted to do is have my own gym where I can really make a difference in people’s lives. CrossFit is an amazing system where it’s so much fun that you instantly get hooked and before you know it you’ve achieved all your body-image goals, but best of all - they don’t matter anymore, because of the confidence you’ve gained through your athletic achievements.” More details can be found at the Crossfit Westcountry website: www.crossfitwestcountry.com For a free introductory session, please contact Chris on 07725 898 400 or send an email to chris@crossfitwestcountry.com "

Former Chinese Prisoner of Conscience Visits Totnes
Totnes General News StoreAnonymous writes "Annie Yang, a practitioner in the meditation art of Falun Gong, was arrested and spent a year-and-a-half in a Chinese forced labour camp where she was tortured before being released in 2006.

The businesswoman, who is a single mother in her late 40s, suffered physically and mentally and is visiting South Devon to highlight the abuses inflicted on fellow Falun Gong practitioners.

At a special event, hosted by Amnesty International South Devon Group, Annie will talk about her experiences as a prisoner of the Chinese government.

The talk will take place on Wednesday 5 March at St John’s Church, Totnes from 7.30pm with opportunities for discussion. Admission is free of charge.

Annie said: "Today I live in a peaceful environment, but I miss, even more than ever, fellow practitioners who are still being illegally imprisoned in labour camps and prisons. I know clearly, and have a deep understanding, of what cruel, evil and inhuman places they are.

"Even now I am still suffering from another kind of unbearable pain in my heart. The police arrested me in front of my 16-year-old son, who witnessed the whole process as they illegally searched my home. He cried and called for help from my parents at midnight (as I am a single mother).

"I cannot imagine and have no idea how much effect it would have on his young mind for watching what was happening to me. It was 12:45 am when I was taken away by force, from my home. When my father, who is over 70 years old, heard the news, he had a heart attack; he sat there and could not speak. He only survived after emergency treatment.

"Now I am facing another painful choice, if I choose to stay here, I will have to bear the suffering of long term separation with my son. But if I chose to go back to China, I would be re-arrested and would suffer even crueller persecution and maybe even lose my life."

A spokesman for Amnesty International South Devon Group said: "We are delighted Annie Yang is now free to tell her story to people in South Devon.

"Amnesty International is a worldwide non-religious, non-political human rights organisation that campaigns for the freedom of prisoners of conscience like Annie, who have been imprisoned simply for their beliefs.

"We hope her story will inspire more people locally to become involved with Amnesty's work, writing letters to prisoners and authorities, raising funds and campaigning."

NOTES TO EDITORS:

1 - Reporters and photographers are welcome to interview and photograph Annie at the event.

2 - For further information please contact Wailim Wong on 07748-654468 or wailim@blueyonder.co.uk. After 1 March please contact Lindsey Pike on 07814 843903 or lindsey.pike@gmail.com

3 – Refreshments will be available at the church.

  young people's Community Mentoring Scheme
Totnes General News Storetq9yes writes "Totnes Youth Enguiry Service are about to start a mentoring scheme for young people and require volunteers who can give 1 or 2 hours a week over a sustained period of time to mentor a young member of the community.

Mentoring is a face to face meeting in which a mentor helps and supports a person through a time in their life where perhaps, normal support is missing.

There are self rewards for both parties and a real chance to improve community relationships throughout different peer groups.

If interested please phone our office on 01803 865432 and ask for Mark"
